SCBCEG Action Plan Streamlining
In 2023/24 the SCBCEG have conducted an action streamlining and rationalisation process to ensure that all Action Plan items adhere to SMART principles: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.
The Task

In 2023, the Swansea and Carmarthen Bay Coastal Engineering Group Action Plan consisted on 428 actions.
Each year, in accordance with Measure 10 of the National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Strategy for Wales, all group members are required to provide an update and comment on the progress of these actions. For a group of 9 members, this was a lot of work. With a designated SCBCEG Coastal Officer in position in 2023, the group could now make progress on ensuring that this action plan was more accurate, up-to-date, and easier to manage.
The Process

In 2023/24, the Swansea and Carmarthen Bay Coastal Group has undertaken a comprehensive review to streamline its action plan. This effort focused on ensuring that each action adheres to SMART principles, making them Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. The group removed or consolidated duplicate actions and transitioned routine tasks to a separate "Business-as-Usual Register" for more efficient tracking. Additionally, knowledge gaps were identified, with targeted actions added to address these. Outdated actions were updated in alignment with findings from the recent Health Check Report, enhancing consistency with other Welsh Coastal Groups. Each group member was consulted individually to review and update actions relevant to their specific roles, remove those no longer applicable, and introduce new actions as necessary.
The Result

As of November 2024, the SCBCEG Action Plan now has a far more manageable and meaningful 85 actions. This number will change over the coming years as members complete actions, and as new actions are added to support evidence gaps, scheme work and adaptation planning.
