CoastSnap
The Wales Coastal Monitoring Centre Citizen Science Project asks citizen scientists to take photos of the coastline from mobile phone mounts dotted across the South Wales coastline.
The Project
CoastSnap is a global citizen science project hosted in Wales by the Wales Coastal Monitoring Centre, designed to engage the public in documenting coastal changes at key beaches across Wales. By using fixed smartphone mounts at designated CoastSnap stations, visitors can take photos of the shoreline and share them via the site QR code or website. These images are compiled into time-lapse sequences that provide visual evidence of coastal evolution over time.
Uses of the Data
The project helps monitor coastal erosion, sand movement, and the impacts of climate change, providing valuable data for scientific analysis and sustainable coastal management. Public participation broadens the project's reach, making it an effective tool for increasing awareness about coastal dynamics and fostering community involvement in flooding and coastal erosion issues. This initiative supports decision-making processes aimed at protecting Wales’ diverse and changing coastline. For more details, visit CoastSnap.
